Prison Ministry

Building the Church inside Prison Walls

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new".      II Corinthians 5:17

"Remember those in prison, as if you were chained to them"     Hebrews 13:3

We believe that no life is beyond the reach of God’s power, and we envision a future in which countless prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families, are redeemed, restored, and reconciled through the love and truth of Jesus Christ.
To that end, we seek to partner with churches and other prison ministries to spread the Gospel and nurture disciples behind prison walls, so that men and women become new creations in Christ – not repeat offenders.
Detention Facility

Because the prison system can be a painful and damaging process for inmates , these individuals are often in great need of being treated with dignity and compassion, as our faith calls us to do.

Brief Testimony:
I was abandoned by my father, raised in the projects, rejected and abused, a user of drugs and alcohol for many years, lived in total dysfunction and lived in hopelessness until the day God came along and picked up all my broken pieces. Years passed and then my only brother was sentenced to 106 yrs. for attempted second degree murder, My heart was broken and my world was turned upside down. I seen first hand the injustice of the judicial system.  I seen first hand the heartache of families destroyed and innocent children left behind when a loved one is imprisoned for life. I resigned from my job with Social Services and  Building HOPE Prison Ministry was birthed in 1999. I have learned that razor wire and concrete can't keep the love of Jesus out!

We currently have a team of  clergy that minister to the maximum security inmates across North Carolina & South Carolina.  We also work with Prison Fellowship, Angel Tree Ministries, Kairos, People of Faith Against the Death Penalty,  and other in-prison teams to meet the needs of the inmates & their innocent children.
Rev. Donna Phelps, Founder of Building HOPE Prison Ministries

The Prison Ministry  is a comprehensive outreach spanning various areas of need. Our ultimate goal is  to aid in the restoration of their lives through the infusion of intellectual, emotional and spiritual influence that is directed to help them discard harmful patterns and unhealthy attitudes, avoid addictive and destructive relationships and behavior, stay out of prison,to reduce the recidivism rate of offenders; and become positive contributors to society; and to bring awareness to the local Church of our nation's fastest growing population and their role in reaching those impacted by incarceration (offender, release, family, and the community).

This is truly the day for the church to step beyond its boundaries and offers not only hope through the Gospel, but some practical assistance to a world disabled by dysfunction. Locked beneath the trappings of addiction, prostitution, crime, and homelessness, lie silent treasures waiting to be released. We must, as the Body of Christ, the sleeping giant, rise out of our comfortable setting and rescue these hidden deposits of greatness. Along with the mending power of the Gospel, we must point these lives in the direction of their destiny. As a result, they can return to their families as role models, to the church as a gift to the Body of Christ, and to the community as evidence of the love, power, and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

 Pray for Prisoners

Our nation has one of the highest prison populations in the world. Many inmates are the tragic product of a largely fatherless generation. Pray for Holy Spirit revival to sweep across prisons in America. Pray for strength and encouragement for all men and women crying out for the Lord, that they may come to know their Heavenly Father.

In many prisons, men and women who have come to the Lord are leading others to Christ,  and being a light for those sitting in darkness. Some are leading Watches in their prison. Pray that the Lord will strengthen and encourage these men and women, anointing them to minister in power to those around them. Pray for deliverance to come for those who are oppressed by drugs and addictions.

Healthcare is an essential component of reentry. Every  client is given the opportunity to incorporate health education and awareness training as part of their reentry goals.

Building Hope Ministries provides clients, resources for low income and locally affordable health clinics, and pharmacies.

Spiritual Guidance

Building Hope Ministries  knows that most clients who are struggling with successful reentry depend on some type of spiritual guidance to help encourage them along the way.

Every client referred to us from the Department of Corrections Chaplains office is given the opportunity to choose from our team of trained faith-based volunteers to serve as their mentor or to connect to faith based chaplaincy services and spiritual counseling.

In addition, we encourage  community service projects that give every client an opportunity to give back and be productive citizens of their communities. This experience in itself is spiritually rewarding.
